Augmented Reality App: Layar
Name: Layar
Layar was founded in 2009. Layar is an augmented reality app. The Layar app allows teachers and students to extend the physical world with virtual overlay. The Layar App can be downloaded on iOS and Android devices. Layar was once one of the world's most popular platform for AR. Layar is part of the Blippar Group. The Layar app is free, but the Layar Creator is not. Once the app is downloaded you can scan pages and/or QR codes by tapping the "Scan" in the menu. Align the page or QR code in the on-screen frame and tap the screen to scan. Make sure to keep your device pointed at the page or QR code to see it come alive with digital content. Beth Holland on Edudemic has a helpful article "How to Start Using Augumented Reality in Education". In the article she compares two of the most popular tools for creating Augmented Reality, Layar and Aurasma. She also shares links to other educators who use AR in their classrooms.

Layar in Education: Bring Learning into the Future list seven reasons for using AR in education.
- Grow student engagement.
- Support alumni relations.
- Embrace connectivity and immediacy trends.
- Improve innovative image.
- Enable assessment support.
- Encourage long-distance learning.
- Extend the "life" of print.
- Adding explanations with text and images. The most basic way to use AR in the classroom is with textbooks.
- Adding explanations with videos.
- Add a quiz. You can embed an interactive poll or quiz to gauge learning.
- Add student reviews in video or text.
- Create educational posters with video, images or text. Students can scan posters to learn more about the subject matter they cover. (Example)
- Create a treasure hunt with images. You can use AR to create a treasure hunt by placing different images around the school. (Blog)
- Create an interactive timeline.

Hi there,
ReplyDeleteYour examples were really helpful and exciting to read. Thank you! I immediately thought of how interesting schools implementing the Ron Clark Academy "house" system into their school culture would find the use of AR technology when reading your blog. Wouldn't it be thrilling for students/"house members" to have specific scavenger hunts for their "houses"? I think this technology could be used for this purpose as an incentive or reward.
Thanks again,
Ashley
I really wish that the text books that we use had a Layer enhancement. Having the video already part of the text would save a lot of time for teachers to find them. I really like how you can scan openly outside and it will tell you what is around. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, Catherine! It would be so efficient if textbooks already had supplemental videos embedded in their pages via the Layar app. Zoan, when I watched the first video in your blog, all I could think is that Google will most likely buy Layar in the next year (or create a competing product) because of the tool's ubiquity and application across age levels and environments. I think we will see Layar or a similar product more and more soon. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Catherine, if this was available for the text books that we use it would enhance the learning experiences of students. I would love to see something like this application incorporated into the South Carolina history text books, especially for 3rd grade, since they are not interactive or online. I feel my students would retain the information longer if this was added. Great blog Zoan.
